A dashboard is a spreadsheet's answer to one question: what do I need to know right now? Getting there takes four steps: clean the data, pick the numbers, choose the charts, and lay them out in reading order.

Dashboards need tidy data: one header row, one row per record, one kind of value per column.
Write one sentence: 'Our sales manager needs to see which regions are behind target this month.' The reader and question decide everything else. A dashboard for everyone is useful to no one.
Put the most important numbers in large cards at the top: totals, averages, rates. If a number would not change anyone's decision, leave it out.
Trends over time: line chart. Comparing categories: bar chart. Parts of a whole with few parts: a simple share chart. Exact values: a table. See our guide on which chart to use.
People read top-left to bottom-right. Headline numbers first, then the main trend, then breakdowns, then the detail table. Add filters so readers can answer their own follow-up questions.
Upload your Excel or CSV and DashForge detects column types, plans numbers and charts for your question, and lays them out with filters and a table. Your file is read in your browser, and you can try a free sample dashboard first.
Not for most small dashboards. A spreadsheet or a tool like DashForge is enough.
Usually four to eight. More than that and nothing stands out.
Only for a few parts of a whole. Bar charts are easier to compare.
As often as the decision it supports: daily for operations, weekly or monthly for most businesses.
