How to write a good ChatGPT prompt

If ChatGPT gives you bland answers, the problem is usually the prompt, not the AI. A good prompt gives the AI what a smart new colleague would need: who to be, what you want, the background, how to approach it and what the result should look like.

The six parts of a strong prompt

You don't need all six every time, but the more important the task, the more of them you should include.

Role: who the AI should act as (an experienced HR manager)
Goal: what you want and why
Context: the facts it can't know (your company, audience, situation)
Steps: how to approach it
Format: length, structure, tone, table or bullets
Rules: what to avoid and what to do when unsure

Before and after

Weak: 'Write a job ad for a cashier.'

Strong: 'Act as a retail hiring manager. Write a job ad for a part-time cashier at a family supermarket in Kandy, weekends only. Audience: students and young adults. Include pay range (Rs 1,200 per shift), duties, and how to apply by WhatsApp. Friendly tone, under 150 words, with a short bullet list of duties. Do not ask for experience.'

The second prompt takes 30 seconds longer to write and saves several rounds of back and forth.

Give examples

If you want a particular style, paste an example of it. One good example beats a paragraph of description. Say clearly which parts to copy (tone, length) and which not to (topic).

Iterate, don't restart

If the answer is close, say exactly what to change: 'shorter', 'more formal', 'remove the third point', 'add a table'. Specific feedback improves the next answer quickly.

Common mistakes

Most bad results come from one of these.

Asking for several unrelated things at once
